I think it was because Santa was sort of supposed to be like Jesus, he would give gifts to others out of the goodness of his heart. Then, people just got so focused on the gift-giving and forgeting what Christmas really is. An example is the man who was killed on Black Friday by being trampled by Christmas shoppers.
I think maybe people who don't believe in Jesus wanted something to believe in and a reason to celebrate and shop. It makes me sad when people don't even know the real meaning of Christmas. Especially since the name of the holiday kinda gives it away.
It went from jesus to santa by the goverment wanting to make money so they made an exuse to buy stuff on christmas.
